A Sweet Prospect Find for a Sagittarius and a Gemini

On a recent visit to Adelaide, my sister and I went in search of a new café along Prospect Road following the sad closure of the once-iconic Cibo. That spot held many memories for locals, and for us - two sisters with completely different tastes — finding a replacement felt like a near-impossible task.



She’s a *Gemini* through and through - chatty, indecisive, and happy with a *super weak, medium coffee* (honestly, less than a quarter of a shot - is it even coffee?). Meanwhile, I’m a classic *Sagittarius* - bold, direct, and all about my coffee being *small, strong, and with an extra shot*. Naturally, the café we were looking for had to impress both of us - no easy feat.

Enter Muratti Cakes & Gateaux, located at 114B Prospect Road. Over the years, I’d heard whispers of its greatness, especially from my Italian friends, who speak of it with a reverent tone—and it did not disappoint.

Founded in 1990 by Polish immigrants Robert Ziolek and Darek Pietka, Muratti was born from a dream to bring premium-quality patisserie to the suburbs. Though the name “Muratti” carries an Italian-French-European flair, the heart behind it is pure passion, tradition, and family values. Over the decades, the owners have drawn inspiration from frequent overseas trips, bringing a touch of global class back to Adelaide - while keeping the focus on local community joy.



The space itself has a refined yet welcoming atmosphere. We settled in, placed our wildly different coffee orders - and to our surprise - both came out perfectly made. That’s no small feat, especially for two sisters who rarely agree on coffee, let alone cafés.

Then came the highlight: the cakes and pastries. Each piece was more tempting than the next - delicate, decadent, and absolutely divine. We tried a few classics, and every bite confirmed why Muratti is still a local legend. The attention to detail and flavour balance is exactly what you’d expect from a patisserie that was voted South Australia's best cake maker in 2022.

Muratti isn't just a café. It’s a cultural institution - a beautiful fusion of European tradition, Adelaide charm, and heartfelt customer service.
