Back in the day, when Europeans were trying to settle down, a bunch of tough Prussian women were hauling their goods from Hahndorf through the Adelaide Hills to the big city market. Picture this: women and girls strutting their stuff on a 26-kilometre trek to keep the colony from going hungry. Talk about a workout! Fast forward to 1980, and the National Trust of South Australia and Walking SA stumbled across an old map showing the very trail these ladies blazed. They thought, why not name it the Pioneer Women's Trail, and here we are today, with thousands of walkers joining the trek every year since 2009.
So, if you fancy a nice stroll through the scenic Adelaide Hills, bring your walking shoes and sense of adventure. You can kick things off at Hahndorf (26km), Bridgewater (19km), or Stirling (12km), depending on how much cardio you're feeling up for. On reaching Beaumont House, you'll be treated to some pretty spectacular views of the city, plus food trucks and live music to help you unwind after that little jaunt. It's a great way to connect with nature, fellow walkers, and perhaps a cheese toastie or two.
