1. Hike the Bluff
Believe it or not, the Bluff is a volcano, but it has been dormant for around 500 million years, which is just as well. It is a magnificent sight, and to this day, you can still see dried lava around the base, gradually getting worn down and shaped by many years of crashing waves and weather. You can take the Rosetta Trail, an 800-metre circuit that takes approximately 1 hour, depending on fitness level. It's a long, steep hike up the various trails that The Bluff offers, perfect for those who like to challenge themselves. There is no rock climbing needed, and dogs are welcome. The reward at the top is worth every step: amazing views of the ocean and surrounding islands. In winter, you might even spot whales, mainly from June through to October.
For something more of an adrenaline rush, Surf & Sun offers an
'Off the Bluff Abseiling Experience', open to anyone aged seven and over for the experience of a lifetime! If this interests you, more information is available at [https://visitvictorharbor.com/things-to-do/tours-and-attractions/off-the-bluff-abseiling/]

2. Picnic at Petrel Cove
If you'd rather take things easy, Petrel Cove is a beautiful and somewhat secluded beach, right at the foot of The Bluff. It is surrounded by hills and striking basalt rock formations — formed when the Bluff last erupted. From the beach, you have a clear view of West Island, home to Australian sea lions and native birds. Seals and seabirds can sometimes be spotted along the shore, and dolphins occasionally pass through the water nearby. The sand is wonderfully soft, and the setting makes it a perfect spot for a picnic and some people-watching.

3. Victor Harbor Heritage Trail
Just off from Petrel Cove is the Victor Harbor Heritage Trail. This trail offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the region — powerful waves, views of the Bluff, nearby islands, Petrel Cove and other beaches down below. If you are lucky, you might even see dolphins or whales along the way. Dogs are welcome, and it's worth bringing a camera.

4. The Esplanade
The Encounter Bay Esplanade is a relaxed, versatile stretch that works at any time of day. If you're staying nearby, it's a great spot to catch a sunrise or sunset. The path is suitable for bikes, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades, and dogs are a common sight. Drop down onto the beach itself, next to the esplanade if you'd rather have sand or water underfoot.

5. Swimming
There's no shortage of options for a swim around Encounter Bay. Petrel Cove is one choice, though it's a rougher beach. While this beach is swimmable, wading in the shallows is a safer alternative for most, but the undertow is still quite powerful. The surf conditions further out are best left to confident swimmers. Just make sure to take precautions and read the signs. For calmer water, the beach on Franklin Parade is a good alternative and more family-friendly. The shallows have patches of reef and seaweed, but there are sandy gaps for wading and snorkelling over the seaweed, which is a popular option. If you have a kayak or paddleboard, the generally quiet waters make it ideal for heading further out.
