UK band Fischer-Z is indeed heading to Australia for the first time ever in late 2026! They are bringing hits from across their entire career as part of their 50th anniversary world tour, making this a very special moment for fans here.
In the 1970s Britain, as punk raw energy and the electronic pulse of new wave dominated the airwaves, clinical psychology student John Watts teamed up with Stephen Skolnik to form the progressive band Fischer-Z.
The UK 2019s turbulent political climate - marked by the miners strike and widespread unemployment - provided a powerful backdrop that shaped the band music and creative direction. Gigs in clubs followed and as the bands' sound and style developed, they were described as a band with a new wave sound, like
Roxy Music and contemporaries
Talking Heads .
With hit singles including "So Long" (1980), a breakthrough hit and early MTV favourite, which reached Number 15 in Australia and standout long plays including "Going Deaf For a Living". Fischer-Z continued to evolve and release 19 albums and performed more than 3,000 concerts worldwide. They earned widespread success across continental Europe and sold over two million records. Along the way, acclaimed artists including
Peter Gabriel ,
Steve Cropper and
Dexy's Midnight Runners' brass section have contributed to the band's recordings.
And now, after a musical career of 50 years, Fischer Z is touring Australia for the first time. I asked founder John Watts about the upcoming tour.
You're heading to Australia for the very first time how does it feel to finally be bringing the tour Down Under?
Well, it's extremely exciting. I always have had an ambition to come to Australia either to play music or cricket! We have made overtures to Australian promoters in the past, but they can never make up their mind at what level of venues to pitch the shows. Fischer-Z are one of the few bands who have had hits in Australia at different times but never toured there.
The Australian shows form part of your global tour and celebrates Fischer-Zs' 50th anniversary. What does it mean to share this milestone with audiences around the world?
We have sometimes been described as undiscovered despite a long and varied career! (One of the substantial acts you have never heard of!) This milestone tour is an opportunity for the existing fans and a whole new audience to have a chance to appreciate the whole body of Fischer-Z work, from post-punk new wave, through hip-hop and poetry, to albums with accompanying art shows and films. This will be a great opportunity to share and surprise, with a strong emphasis on gaining wider recognition in the English-speaking world.
With such an extensive catalogue behind you, what can Australian fans expect from the Fischer-Z live experience in 2026?
The Australian audiences can expect music from all Fischer-Z incarnations, including the iconic 80s material plus something from every album since, synergised in such a way that they fit together in one cohesive set. A Fischer-Z show is a true live event. The set list is never the same and the songs are performed in the way John feels them on the night. It has been described by friends as organised music Chaos! No clicks, no fixed formats, extreme dynamics and music coming from the heart and soul. Don 2019t expect nostalgia!
Catch Fischer-Z live and experience this milestone celebration for yourself at venues across the country.
