Kalymnos Pastries Turns 30: A Taste of Greece in Adelaide
If you grew up around Greek families, and the western suburbs of Adelaide - as I did - you’ll understand that food isn’t just food. It’s heritage, heart, and a whole lot of love. I spent a couple of years travelling and living in Athens between 2000 and 2002, and those memories cemented my affection for Greek culture, music, hospitality…and especially the food.
So for my recent birthday, I decided to bring a slice of Greece back home and revisited Kalymnos Pastries to lighten the catering load. With a frappe in hand (because of course), I ordered their Pastitsio and Moussaka—both picked up on the morning of their 30th anniversary celebrations on 30 November. They were everything I hoped for - rich, comforting, authentic flavours you can’t replicate at home. Truly delicious. Thank you, Kalymnos!

As an added burst of joy, both my son and I entered their $30 birthday voucher raffle—and he won this morning. Naturally, we headed straight back for round two: more frappes, plus Kataifi, Diples and Koulourakia to share. Sitting outside in the warm air with that unmistakable Greek atmosphere felt like a tiny holiday.

A little about Kalymnos and its fourth-generation pastry legacy Kalymnos Pastries was established in 1995 by Executive Pastry Chef George Diakomichalis, a proud fourth-generation pastry chef carrying on his family’s tradition here in Adelaide. The story of how his craft came to be passed down is remarkable:
George's great-grandfather, Mihali Vouros
In the early 1900s, George’s great-grandfather, Mihali, was sent from Kalymnos to Russia to work with a Kalymnian pastry-chef family after his own father tragically drowned during a sponge-fishing expedition. Mihali mastered the craft, returned to Kalymnos, and opened the family’s first patisserie in 1918. Under the guidance of his grandfather and uncles, George later completed his own training in Kalymnos before bringing the craft to South Australia.
Today, supported by his family and the award-winning KP team, George continues that proud tradition - creating some of the finest Greek pastries, cakes and savoury specialties in Adelaide.
