Located at Aldinga Library, 11 Central Way, Aldinga Beach, join acclaimed author Mij Tanith as she shares the inspiration and journey behind her powerful new novel, Laila’s Story on Friday, 19 June 2026 from 2 pm to 3.30 pm.

In a career spanning over 40 years, Mij Tanith has written plays, short stories, poetry and articles for a number of magazines and online publications. She has been a writer-in-residence in different communities, taught creative writing at TAFE, and produced several highly successful literary events.

Laila’s Story is a blend of narrative and poetry that documents a year-long effort to support an Afghan single mother, Laila, and her five daughters as they seek safety in Australia. What begins as a simple request for help evolves into a year-long journey of connection, resilience, and unexpected friendship. Through the story of Laila and her growing relationship with the author, this work explores the power of human connection across seemingly insurmountable divides of language, culture, age, sexuality, and faith. Laila and her daughters now reside in Australia. Laila's Story has resonated strongly with Australian audiences.

Launched in March this year, it has been listed as The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald's Non-Fiction Book of the Week and has been featured in both Women's Weekly and the Weekend Magazine. Proudly supported by The Willunga Circle of Friends, you can expect lively conversation, audience Q&A, and book signings on the day. Copies of Laila's Story will be available to purchase via EFTPOS or cash for $25. Please book here to join this FREE community event open for everyone. Complementary tea, coffee and nibbles will be provided. Please note that this event is suitable for adults. For more information, please contact Aldinga Library on telephone number (08) 8384 0022.
